A pair of great ones. Nick Ut and Kim Phuc at Eddie Adams Workshop in 2012 during a ceremony honoring photographers who were killed in action in Vietnam. The World Press Photo organization has "suspended" Nick’s credit for his famous photo "Napalm Girl" of Kim running down the road. A vast majority of us have called BS on their shameful edict. I was in Washington, D.C. 24 years ago today, September 11, 2001, a dark day in American history. I took this from the Newsweek bureau across the river right after highjacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, killing all 64 people on the plane and 125 people in the Pentagon. Remembering the victims. @cntrforcreativephoto @thebushcenter @improvambassador @nickkennerly @j_kennerly @prezfotog @petesouza @bobmcneelyphoto @mikebarnicle @axiosmike @wapokp @hasanelahi @tjtubutis @beckysenfccp

The last goodbye. Seven years ago today the casket bearing Sen. John McCain followed by his wife Cindy McCain and family leaves the Naval Academy Chapel at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Sept. 2, 2018. The family asked me to photograph the funeral services in Phoenix and Washington, and I was honored to do so. John was the embodiment of the American independent spirit. @jimmcaz @jsmccainiv @meghanmccain @mccaininstitute @cntrforcreativephoto @marksalter55 @emcmen @clarke.victoria @petesouza @bobmcneelyphoto @mikebarnicle @canonusa

I’m reposting this from seven years ago to honor Senator John McCain and his family, and also to remind people of how much Donald Trump disrespected him. For some twisted reason Trump is hung up about people thanking him and being grateful for services not rendered, for wanting a Nobel Prize because Obama got one, for having his ass kissed 24/7 by those around him. I give you this:
One of McCain’s last requests was to have the two men who defeated him for the presidency, @georgewbush and @barackobama deliver his eulogy at the National Cathedral. (I took this seven years ago today, September 1, 2018. His wife Cindy and family are in the background as his casket leaves the church).
Notably, President Trump was not invited to the memorial and the @wncathedral pushed back against Trump’s assertion that he had to approve the funeral arrangements for McCain. “Washington National Cathedral was honored to host the funeral service for Sen. John McCain. All funerals and memorial services at the Cathedral are organized by the family of the deceased; only a state funeral for a former president involves consultation with government officials,” a cathedral spokesperson said. “No funeral at the Cathedral requires the approval of the president or any other government official.” So there.
Trump claimed that he was not thanked for signing off on the funeral arrangements for the Republican senator. “I gave him the kind of funeral that he wanted, which as president I had to approve,” Trump told a crowd in Ohio. “I don’t care about this. I didn’t get a thank you, that’s OK. We sent him on the way. But I wasn’t a fan of John McCain." There you have it, the words of a petty little man. Nothing has changed, only gotten worse.
McCain was given a splendid sendoff by those who loved and admired him. Knowing John he would have laughed at Donald J. Trump’s bullshit. @jsmccainiv @meghanmccain @marksalter55 @mikebarnicle @emoconnor7 @emcmen @clarke.victoria @petesouza @improvambassador @senjohnmccain @ussjohnsmccain_ddg56 @bobmshrum @jheilemann @johnrodphotography @utnicky @bobmcneelyphoto @schultzinit

One of the best died seven years ago at 81. @senjohnmccain was a Vietnam hero (Yes, Donald a hero, not for being captured, but despite being tortured for refusing to be released ahead of those POW`s who had been there longer). I made this photo with the senator and his wife Cindy McCain campaigning in front of the Alpha Delta House at Dartmouth in 2000. Missing a man who had grit, guts and honor. Note to Republican senators: Here`s how to behave, try it for a change.
