Update on @gofundme for Dick and Germaine Swanson. I was with them last week outside of DC. First, and most important, they send love and thanks to all of you who donated to help them out. It has been a miraculous response! I took this of Dick and his two exceptional helpers at an assisted care facility where he`s now ensconced. This was the first time he was able to walk in six months and it was a big moment. I attribute this to finally getting the care he needed. This wouldn`t have happened without you. They could still use more help, this place though reasonable is still expensive. I appreciate all you`ve done and please let others know about the fundraiser. Thanks so much. Really sorry to hear that Bob “Doc” Daugherty has left us. I spent many days and weeks with him covering presidents and other adventures. Loved the guy. Doc was in a league of his own.

@robertd127 was not only a brilliant photographer but also a world-class prankster. He could have played the Joker in Batman. During President Gerald R. Ford’s trip to the People’s Republic of China in 1975, Pulitzer Prize-winning former AP photographer Eddie Adams was on the receiving end of one of his best-ever pranks. Eddie, on assignment for TIME Magazine, rushed into the AP darkroom with three rolls of film. He said, "I`ve got to get these developed right now to make Time`s deadline." The lab guy said could handle only one roll at the moment and asked him to mark the most important one. Eddie did and left. Doc told the guy to develop all three rolls and then substituted a blank roll that he marked to look like Eddie’s.

Is the film ready?" Eddie asked when he got back. I onlyhad time to do two of the three you wanted," he was told.

"Jesus Christ, those are the wrong two!” he said and held up his marked roll. "This is the one I need, it has the best pictures of the president and Deng Xiaoping."
“You better do it yourself, we`re tied up with our own stuff." Doc waited until Eddie was in the darkroom and for enough time that the film would be out of its cassette. He then opened the door and flicked on the lights. “Anybody in here?" he asked innocently. Adams let out an agonized scream as he bent over and tried to shove the exposed film between his legs to protect it. “Turn off the goddamn light!" he yelled. Doc and the rest of the staff gathered in the doorway and laughed in appreciation at the stunt and Eddie`s panic. Only then did Doc show Eddie the three processed rolls. For all of you who went to Germaine’s Restaurant or were touched by them over the years, I started this fundraiser for Dick & Germaine Swanson because I love them and want them to have some peace. Dick didn’t like the idea but Germaine thought it was the only option left. It brings me no joy to have to do this, but it’s supporting a fight for their dignity. Dick is 92, Germaine 90.
