One Eye, Three Points of View, and a Blue Moon

By David Hume Kennerly | Sep 3, 2012

I keep my “photo instrument” in tune by trying to shoot pictures every day.  The iPhone has really helped. It’s light, the photo quality is good, and you can talk to people on it. The iPhone, doesn’t replace my grown-up cameras, of course, which are the new Canon 5D Mark IIIs. They are the reliable […] Read More

Roberta McCain, mother of @senjohnmccain , has died at 108. Her daughter-in-law @cindymccain made the announcement today. Roberta was born Feb. 7, 1912, a week before #arizona became a state. Her son served as Arizona's senator from 1987-2018. Here Sec. of Defense James Mattis presents Roberta with the flag that covered her son's casket at his gravesite at the U.S. Navy Academy, Sept. 2, 2018. Sen. McCain's wife Cindy is behind her. I was privileged to be there as the family's photographer. @cntrforcreativephoto @mccaininstitute #johnmccain #centerforcreativephotography #jamesmattis @meghanmccain @jhmmccain ...

Thirty four years ago on Oct. 12, 1986, U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met in Reykjavik for their 2nd summit. Although it ended with no deal and some hard feelings, it also lead to a breakthrough that eventually facilitated the INF Treaty, the first agreement requiring the US and the USSR to reduce, rather than merely limit, their arsenals of nuclear weapons. It also produced one of my best TIME cover photographs. At the time we couldn't upload photos from a computer, (we didn't have one that could do that), but thanks to the foresight of fellow Time photog @dirck.halstead and @time photo boss Arnold Drapkin they tied up the only scanner in Iceland capable of converting transparencies into photos that could be transmitted. I took the story-telling picture on that Sunday night, and it was beamed to New York, and appeared on the cover of Time the next day. It was a journalistic coup in the magazine world, and one of my proudest moments in the news biz. @cntrforcreativephoto ...

In a Mussolini-like moment, @realDonaldTrump, back from the hospital and infectious, stands on the White House balcony, removes his mask, and poses for photos. He turned, walked unmasked into the Blue Room, then walked back out to recreate the moment for a propaganda video that was released later. He tweeted from Walter Reed, “Don’t be afraid of Covid.” Words to die by, and reckless. The President of the United States is a clear and present danger to the Republic and it’s citizens. ...

Rarely do food pics, but tonight I made a killer bbq chicken salad that I’ll share with you! Ingredients: Avocado, bean sprouts, red onion, cucumber, romaine lettuce, freshly cooked corn, tomato, a squeeze of fresh lemon, chicken thighs simmered in Stubbs Sweet Heat BBQ sauce, then thinly sliced on top of the salad, complimented with a light drizzle of original Salt Lick BBQ sauce straight from Driftwood, Texas! Too good for words! ...

Bob Gibson, Hall of Fame pitcher for the @cardinals is dead at 84. I took this as he pitched against the @dodgers during his incredible 1968 year where he finished the regular season with a 1.2 ERA. Gibson was National League MVP and won the Cy Young Award that year. In Game 1 of the World Series he threw a shutout against the Detroit Tigers, striking out a Series record 17 batters that beat Sandy Koufax's 1963 record by two outs. The Cards lost the Series 4-3. @cntrforcreativephoto #bobgibson #baseball #mvp #cyyoung #cardinalsbaseball ...
